56 players at the recent Tallebudgera Tournament certainly made for a fantastic weekend. It’s been ages since we have seen these numbers at Gold Coast tournaments. It augers well for future events. It’s certainly encouraging to see that numbers registering to play in our tournaments has steadily increased over the past 12 months.
With the increase in numbers we have also seen a marked increase in the level of competition. Some of the games I watched (forced to the sidelines because of an ankle injury) definitely were very fast, skillful and performed with a high percentage of long rallies. They were a joy to watch.
The Winning team the Meninga’swith a total point score of 2453.
At the end of play on Saturday, the score line was equally impressive with only 12 points separating the top three teams. The selectors certainly did a great job despite the fact of some late withdrawals. It’s never easy to get it right particularly when new players join the ranks.
Saturday night was most entertaining when 30 players met at the Burleigh Bowls club for our social dinner. Both the company and food was excellent.
If there were any sore muscles on the Sunday morning they soon disappeared as the day was yet another one of excellent badminton. Position for first and second place all came down to the last game. The Lewis’ team was well ahead when they changed ends and look set to win by a large margin. Maybe it was the cheering and level of excitement by the spectators but the opposing team, the Meninga’s, slowly clawed their way back and finished up winning the tournament by one point. What a finish!
